I lobbed yet another grenade and handed in my resignation this afternoon due to "inflexibility" on the part of my director! He's not in today (but reads his emails) so I might be going up to bat tomorrow. Oh well, we'll see!
Oh I know very well that it would be "subject to review" and explained to my supervisor (who supports me) that if WE found it wasn't working then we could look at it again, but if the Director decided it doesn't suit (I have nothing to do with him) then that would be the day I handed my notice in definitively. And, if he decided to "review" in January, I would be gone by March - which is when our work starts really picking up. We'll see, but although I would like to help my supervisor out (who I like very much) my heart isn't in it any more. Once somebody has jerked my string - despite being extremely laid back - I'm off like a rocket!
I won't regret it. I found out tonight, at my first sewing group of the year, that one of the young women in our group who has battled cancer for about 5 years, can no longer speak and has had one eye removed. She is 39 with an 8 year old daughter, so any whinging I might do would be totally out of place! Puts things in perspective doesn't it!
You know when the time is right to go. I had a countdown to retirement and it couldn't come fast enough. I missed my colleagues but not the management or shifts.
I remember reading your countdown with interest. You were VERY well organized. And I will only miss my colleagues (and perhaps the discipline of going to work) but not the work itself!
Thanks for all the encouragement ladies. You know, my pension is more than liveable - it just won't be as big as what I was planning on in two years' time. But I can always find freelance work, sell the house (which is too big anyway but I love where I live)OR - and get this - our tour manager in Sicily mentioned that I would be very good at what he does. Of course you get VERY difficult people and you have to pace yourself, but it would be a thought! Who knows - but in any case there are endless possibilities out there!
I am really looking forward to going now but I'm still not home and dry (more about that tomorrow) and yes tour managing could be an option - one I hadn't thought about of course. Who knows, a whole new me could be just around the corner!
I might be afraid that even if they accept the terms, in a months time, he tries to rescind, and you'll be back to square one. Hold strong!

DeleteIf your heart really isn't in it anymore then it is time to leave anyway. Just get on with the retirement and don't regret leaving!

ReplyDeleteOoooh! tour managing could be a fabulous new opportunity!
ReplyDeleteI'm so pleased you handed in your resignation, that sense of finality makes it easier to get on with life
